So we’ve looked even further to throw the spotlight on 3 top notch holiday cottages that go that extra mile to make your pooch feel that extra bit welcome…
Flyfisher’s Cottage, Llandrillo, Wales
This is the kind of dog friendly, luxury cottage you’ll never tire of recommending to friends.
Sleeping 6, it is furnished to the highest specification, with standout features including a huge, quirky roll top bath, wood burning stove, underfloor heating and your very own private hot tub overlooking a gorgeous bend of the River Dee.
In fact, nothing beats sitting outside in that hot tub, late at night, listening to the owls, whilst drinking a glass of Prosecco. And how do we know? Because we’ve stayed there ourselves!
With easy access to Snowdonia National Park, this cottage has extensive walks right on its doorstep (including great river swimming opportunities!) as well as being a short drive to some of the most stunning scenery in Wales. Which is fantastic for you and your dog.
So what about your dog? Well, the owners have dogs themselves and understand first-hand what is needed to make everyone’s stay comfortable.
This includes towels and throws; dog bowls; doggy bags and a poo bin in the garden; information about dog friendly pubs, restaurants and walks nearby plus local vet information.
Each dog is welcomed with a treat and for an additional charge, you can buy in dog beds; dog sitters - and even dog hampers!
Dogs are charged at £20 per stay.
Sleeping 6 in 3 bedrooms, prices start from £980 for 7 nights. Short breaks are also available.
Gipping Barn, Stonham Aspal, Suffolk
Set down a leafy private lane in 2 acres, just outside the Suffolk village of Stonham Aspal, is this traditional style Suffolk barn, complete with black weatherboarding and massive oak trusses and beams.
Perfect for two. Well, three (or even four or five) if you fancy taking your dogs too!
One of seven Gold Award luxury barns, Gipping Barn maintains the highest possible standards and humans can look forward to a cosy log burner, a well equipped kitchen, a large, private hot tub and even free bike hire! What’s more, breakfast is even included in the form of a delicious local breakfast basket.
And when it comes to dogs, as the owner himself says, “We don't simply accept dogs; we welcome them with treats and fully enclosed private gardens”.
Awarded the Pets Welcome accreditation by the VisitEngland governing body ‘Quality in Tourism’, visitors to Gipping Barn will find dog bowls; torches and nightlights; dog treats; doggy bags; towels as well as information on local vets plus pet friendly pubs, restaurants and beaches.
Guest reviews all bear this out, with one guest commenting “Gipping barn really does look and feel even more amazing than it looks on the website pics… and the most important thing.. Dougal was safe and happy in the enclosed spacious garden and this meant we were happy and unstressed. My husband said ‘idyllic’ and this sums it up. A beautiful and peaceful place. With plenty to see and do in the surrounding area. Loved it and will recommend!”
Right in the heart of Suffolk, there are plenty of walks from the door - and everywhere is pretty much within half an hour’s drive, including the fabulous heritage coast with the seaside towns of Aldeburgh and Southwold, as well as Walberswick, Woodbridge, Dunwich, Orford and Minsmere.
Dogs are charged at £15 per stay.
Sleeping 2 in one bedroom, prices start from £607 for 7 nights. Short breaks are also available.
Grosvenor Cottage, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire
As breeders of Labradors, the owners of Grosvenor Cottage know more than a thing or two about making dogs welcome in their luxury holiday cottages. And, as with all of these cottages featured, that in no way compromises the high standards of cleanliness you would expect to find when you come and stay.
Grosvenor is particularly dog friendly thanks to its own enclosed courtyard garden - so there’s no chance of a runaway pet setting off to explore the locality without you!
But should you choose to venture further afield, you also have access to a stunning, formal Italianate garden as well as 14 acres of wonderful, private parkland. Yes – 14 acres!! That should tire out even the most lively of dogs…
Inside, you will find Egyptian cotton bed linen, towels, bath robes, slippers and kitchen supplies alongside an LCD television with DVD, iPod dock and Wi-Fi. There’s a small library of films to watch during your stay plus a good choice of books and games. And on arrival, you will be greeted with a welcome hamper of provisions for breakfast, luxury toiletries and a tea tray with milk, sugar, tea, coffee and shortbread.
Dogs bowls are provided along with towels and copious information about local pet-friendly pubs and restaurants (there are at least 6 close by). Local pet food suppliers and vets are also listed.
And should you need to leave your dog whilst you are out for the day, you may make use one of the owner’s kennels or speak to them about arranging a dog sitter.
Dogs are charged at £20 per stay.
Sleeping 3 in two bedrooms, prices start from £660 for 7 nights. Short breaks are also available.
