3 of the most romantic holiday cottages for any time of the year!
Back to latest postsHappy Valentine’s Day! If you’re a fan of that kind of thing then you’re probably not reading this today because you’re busy enjoying breakfast in bed, away from social media, staring lovingly into your partner’s eyes…
However, if like us, you feel Valentine’s Day is something of a contrived commercial enterprise to sell fluffy pink hearts to the masses, then you might be interested in reading on.
It’s not that we’re unromantic. Or ungrateful for the (petrol station) flowers and chocs. Far from it! It’s just that we would prefer to be romantic, year round, on our own terms. Without the rest of the nation cashing in.
And if that’s also you, then you might like to hear about some of our romantic cottages suitable all year round – perfect for an escape for two, whenever you fancy!
Shepherds Hut in South Creake, Norfolk
Is there anything more romantic – or quirky – than a Shepherd’s Hut, complete with a log burner and private hot tub?!
Warm and cosy quirky accommodation
Once primitive shelters for shepherds taking care of their flocks, Shepherds Huts are now highly sought after holiday cottage accommodation and – you’ll be pleased to know – highly insulated against the cold!
Unlike the bricks and mortar of the average holiday cottage, a Shepherds Hut offers much more unusual lodgings for a romantic weekend away. They normally sleep two people in cosy, well thought out surroundings, so there’s no danger of anyone else joining your party!
Log burner, private hot tub and easy access to the beach
This particular Shepherds Hut in South Creak is no exception. Its interior is just perfect – from the beautifully laid out bed, tucked at one end (complete with television!) to the quaint but effective log burner at the other end. Imagine chatting into the evening, lit by nothing more than the glow of the fire.
Or, if you prefer, you can star gaze outside in the private hot tub, overlooking wide open countryside.
There’s even a shower, basin and toilet carefully designed into this hut.
Fans of the north Norfolk coastline can easily access Brancaster, Holkham and Wells from here. Or head inland for a beer at the Hoste Arms in Burnham Market and a bite to eat.
You can even take your dog to this particular hut – and leave it in the day care with the owners if you fancy some time on your own together!
Sleeping two people, this Shepherds Hut costs from £325 for two nights.

Deluxe self-contained pod in Swarland, Northumberland
Another one for fans of a quirky romantic break.
This luxury pod is likely to leave your other half smiling when they take a peek inside to see how incredibly stylish and well-designed its interior is!
A long way away from glamping, this self-contained, deluxe pod is located in the grounds of Old Swarland Hall in Northumberland.
It comprises a double bed, ensuite wet room plus a living area with sofa, complete with breakfast bar!
Luxury pod with a fridge for the Prosecco
Sleeping just two, there are French doors opening out on to a decking area – perfect for watching the sun go down over a glass or two of wine.
With everything you need for a luxury break for two, it’s just down to you to remember the Prosecco (yep, there’s even a fridge).
Prices start from £275 for a 3 night break.
Lighthouse, Roseland Peninsula, Cornwall
It’s location, location, location for this last recommendation.
Because it’s difficult to find a property that is more remotely situated from other people and any closer to the sea!
With views to die for, the cottage sits right at the base of the St Anthony’s Lighthouse, at St Anthony’s Head, at the furthest point of the Roseland Peninsula in Cornwall.
The lighthouse from Fraggle Rock!
Built in 1835, the lighthouse’s more recent claim to fame was that it was featured in the opening sequence of the UK version of Jim Henson's Fraggle Rock, as "The Fraggle Rock Lighthouse". Perfect for any children of the 80s!
The lighthouse itself is still operational but the cottage is totally private, with no public access.
Snuggle up and watch incoming storms
Once you’re inside, wow – those views! The house is stylishly decorated and even features an observation room, with a large picture window, ideal for watching the worst of any incoming storms!
Outside, there’s a sun trap patio area - ideal for taking breakfasts of freshly squeezed orange juice and warm croissants!
Sleeping 4, this cottage costs from £546 for a 2 night break.
