One of the main reasons that people visit Aldeburgh is its connection with the renowned composer, Benjamin Britten. The composer lived in Aldeburgh up until his death in 1976 and ‘The Red House’, Britten’s former home is a must-see attraction. The house has recently undergone major refurbishment and is now open to the public for free!
A visit to Aldeburgh isn’t complete without a walk along the beach and a visit to ‘The Scallop’, a monument by local sculptor Maggi Hambling to commemorate Benjamin Britten who used to take walks along the beach. Inscribed on the 13-foot sculpture are the words “I hear those voices that will not be drowned” from his famous work, Peter Grimes.
The Aldeburgh Martello Tower is the largest chain of towers built to keep out Napoleon. There are a total of eighteen towers built along the coastline, so take time to explore the history of the architecture.

The Aldeburgh Cinema has been screening films since 1919 yet is still a thriving venue. The cinema offers a range of films whilst maintaining its history with original features. The traditional atmosphere sets it apart from any other cinema out there and is well worth a visit.
