Certain buildings are given listed status in the UK in recognition of their special architectural and historical significance.

Whilst buildings with listed status are generally over 30 years, many of them are in fact several hundred years old!

So you can often expect to see them preserved in as near their original condition as possible as they cannot be demolished, extended or altered without special permission.
