Shepherd's hut holiday cottages
Shepherd’s huts - alternatively called shepherd’s wagons – are thought to date as far back as the 15th Century. Originally designed to be very basic dwellings, they were mostly found on remote hillsides and specifically engineered to keep the rain and wind off shepherds tending their flocks, especially during the lambing season.
Mostly constructed from wood on top of an iron chassis, shepherd’s huts typically had a corrugated roof and consisted of just one room. Rather cleverly, they were designed to wheeled, if required, from field to field. And inside, shepherds were kept cosy and warm with a small stove tucked away in one corner, providing basic cooking facilities and much needed warmth.
In time however, the advent of modern farming methods and electricity to the most remote of farms, signalled the start of their decline. And by the 20th century, they ceased to be an essential function of flock tending, instead becoming a much sought-after collectors’ item, with many huts being repurposed as workshops, dens, offices and summer houses.
Shepherd's huts as holiday cottage accommodation
Contemporary shepherd’s huts are now hand built from scratch by skilled craftspeople and come well insulated, fully wired and cosy even in the harshest of winters! This makes them the perfect romantic escape for two (or more) at any time of the year.
Now increasing in popularity as holiday cottage accommodation, Holiday Cottage Compare has a great selection of shepherd’s huts that you can stay in for as little as £223 for a week!
What equipment can I expect to find in a shepherd’s hut?
Shepherd’s hut holiday cottages generally come well equipped with proper beds, mattresses, sofas or chairs, log burners and a kitchen area in which you can cook up breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Some also feature a shower and toilet, saving you the bother of having to visit a nearby but separate shower block in the middle of the night!
And because of their portability, many shepherd’s huts can be found in scenic locations, with views out over to countryside – or even out to sea.
Whatever the features you choose, what you are guaranteed is a cosy but quirky break away in something completely different to the average holiday cottage!
