The attractive and unspoilt, rural village of Gamblesby is ideally placed for exploring the Lake District, North Pennines, Hadrian's Wall the beautiful Eden Valley. Situated near the C2C Cycle Route, the village is characterised by a tiny green, surrounded by 18th century red sandstone buildings. This small farming community, sitting under the Hartside escarpment, once played host to John Wesley, founder of Methodism, who arrived here from Newcastle in 1772. A set of stocks on the village green can be viewed, made at the end of the 18th Century and were last used to punish someone who had stolen a turnip. Gamblesby is one of the few areas in the country which is still home to the native red squirrel and deer and hares can be spotted regularly. The varied birdlife around surrounding countryside make Gamblesby a haven for bird watchers, with curlews, oystercatchers and lapwings seen and heard regularly over the summer months and the frequent visit of fieldfares in the winter. The River Eden runs nearby and the area is renowned for it’s excellent trout and salmon fishing. With walking, cycling, canoeing and climbing opportunities in abundance. Note: Due to rural location, WiFi may be intermittent.
