Location

Northumberland is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian's Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife.

Gilsland is a small village with most of its houses in Northumberland, but the edges spilling over into Cumbria, and is home to a country inn. It is situated on Hadrian's Wall, and is ideal for exploring the north Pennines, Eden Valley, the Scottish Borders and even as far south west as the Lake District National Park. Gilsland lies within 10 miles of Housesteads Roman Fort and Vindalanda, famous for the Roman parchment letters and settlement reconstruction. There are numerous castle ruins close by including Blenkinsopp, Thirlwall, Bellister and Bewcastle. The pretty market town of Brampton is within a 15 minute drive and Carlisle is just 30 minutes away. For a great day trip, visit the Lake District National Park, or spend a day in Cumbria. The scenery in this area is stunning, with wide panoramic vistas looking out on the Roman Wall which follows the Whin Sill escarpment, making this quiet corner of England a walker's and cyclist's delight.
