Location
Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes, the Lake District has it all. From walking in the mountains to exhilarating watersports or just a gentle cruise on a steam-powered yacht, Cumbria is the perfect holiday destination.
Resting on the estuary of Carmel Sands within the Crake Valley is the small village of Greenodd. Set on the borders of the Lake District National Park, this 18th Century town was once a thriving shipbuilding centre and a significant commercial port, exporting locally quarried limestone, gunpowder and copper. Today, Greenodd is a quiet residential town that maintains much of its charm and contains a good selection of shops and a local pub, The Ship, which provides a visible link to the village's history. Just three miles away is the ancient market town of Ulverston, which is famous for its street markets and festivals as well as boasting a wide range of shops, pubs and leisure facilities. It is also home to the only Laurel and Hardy museum in the world and is the birthplace of Stan Laurel. The stunning National Park is within easy reach, as are the towns of Coniston, Windermere and the beautiful Furness Coast with its golden beaches and good birdwatching opportunities.
