Location
Situated eight miles north of the Lake District National Park, the small northern fells village of Bolton Low Houses offers a pub serving good food. Only three miles away is the historic market town of Wigton. Lord Melvyn Bragg was a native of Wigton, and used the town (called Thurston in some of his writings) and the surrounding area as the setting for his novels, which include A Time to Dance. Close by, set just inside the National Park is the lovely village of Caldbeck, which is well worth a visit. The area has something for everyone, including the market town of Keswick, Lakes Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite, the Solway Coast, which is well-known for its golf courses and the town of Cockermouth, the birthplace of William Wordsworth, plus within driving distance is the cathedral city of Carlisle, Hadrian’s Wall and the Scottish Borders. Bolton Low Houses is an ideal base for exploring the area.

Booked separately or alongside its neighbours, this is a comfortable Cumbrian base from which to explore this charming area.
Idyllically situated between the stunning Lake District National Park and the Solway Plain, this cosy group of three holiday cottages sits on the owner's working livestock and arable farm, near the village of Bolton Low Houses and the town of Wigton. With fabulous views across the Cumbrian countryside, these superb cottages have been elegantly converted with every comfort in mind whilst retaining lots of original features – a gentle reminder of their former use as the farm stables. Each has been finished to a high standard, all with a cosy woodburning stove and welcoming accommodation to provide an excellent base for couples, families and friends. Carefully positioned in enclosed grounds, each comes with a private patio and lawned area, whilst there is also a shared outdoor play area for younger guests to enjoy, with plenty of space in which to run around. With a ready supply of seasonal, home-grown vegetables available fresh from the farm, you can enjoy a delicious meal in the comforts of your cosy cottage before taking a walk along the Little Waver river where you may be lucky to spot some local wildlife including badgers, foxes and red squirrels. The popular Lake District town of Keswick is a twenty minute drive away, making these super cottages a perfect base from which to explore the Northern Lake District with its breathtaking scenery and multitude of cycling paths and bridleways. The stunning Solway Coast, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is just fifteen minutes' drive to the west, where guests can visit the Campfield Marsh RSPB nature reserve. There are also several golf courses to enjoy at Silloth and Keswick, whilst the beautiful border city of Carlisle is fifteen miles away and has a Roman Gallery at Tullie House Museum – perfect for a wet day.
