Location

As far back as 250 years Margate opened its doors to holiday makers and is one of the most iconic seaside towns in the country. Known as the leading seaside resort in the UK, drawing Londoners to its long clean golden beaches, with Marine Terrace running along Margate Main Sands from the Lifeboat Memorial to the Harbour Arm where the new Turner Contemporary Gallery is located, built on the site of the artist JMW Turner's holiday home, when wealthy aristocrats travelled down to the seaside for their summer holidays.

Times have changed but since the revival of the staycation Margate has experienced what’s best described as a renaissance and has been eager as ever to pick up where it left off.

Located in the district of Thanet, East Kent and lies 38 miles East-Northeast of Maidstone, on the coast along the North Foreland, and contains the areas of Cliftonville, Garlinge, Palm Bay and Westbrook.

A visit to Margate will draw you not only to the beaches but to the newly aspiring artistic quarter of the old town with its bustling cafes and intriguing architecture. There are great choices of eateries to choose from and the town is simply perfect, be it for a couple’s break or those with a brood looking for a family summer vacation.

The village of Broadstairs, where Charles Dickens lived, is nearby, and there is a very pleasant ‘Dickens – Turner’ walk clearly signposted between Margate and Broadstairs, taking you to some of the favourite haunts of these two giants of the artistic and literary world.

Further afield you can visit nearby Ramsgate, Whitstable and its chic high street or go to the City of Canterbury for some culture and a tour of the medieval streets and the towering cathedral.

Should you enjoy walking The Viking Trail is on your doorstep and follows the coast line around the county.
