Mazzard Farm has everything a great holiday needs. 17 acres (6.5 hectares) of gorgeous woodland, fields, gardens, an orchard, children’s play areas and a cobbled courtyard together offer a great opportunity to have a wonderful time. Whether you are looking for serenity or activity, an area to play and have fun, or sit down and relax, enjoy the beauty of nature or enjoy night skies so black you didn’t even know existed, we can guarantee that Mazzard Farm has it all. Mazzard Farm is not a working farm (bar some ex-battery hens supplying us with lovely eggs, a rabbit and two guinea pigs), but we are surrounded by many, so no shortage of cattle, sheep and horses in the immediate area.

And we are not the only ones recognising the beauty of Mazzard Farm. An abundance of wildlife pay us regular visits; deer, foxes, buzzards, badgers, squirrels, bats, and many more. And they know what you will quickly discover once you are here: Mazzard Farm is heaven on earth!

Things to do

There is really no shortage of things to do in the area. If anything, you are spoilt for choice. Within a 10 – 20 minute drive there are so many facilities that you will need much more than a week to enjoy it all. The beaches at Sidmouth, walks and bike rides on East Hill, wild bird displays, forest walks and drop slides at Escot, gardens and great (indoor and outdoor) play areas at Bicton park, fun at Crealy, fossil hunting near Lyme Regis, trains at Pecorama, The Donkey Sanctuary, or the city of Exeter are just a few of the many attractions / points of interest around. We’re just a 20-minute walk away from the Long Distance Path ‘East Devon Way’.

We can help you to make the most of these by providing you with an extensive ‘We love East Devon – guide of things to do whilst at Mazzard Farm’, compiled for, and with the help of, our guests. This guide will provide you with a great insight in how to most enjoy your time here, without having to wade through endless heaps of folders, leaflets and the like, wasting valuable holiday time. We would happily mail you a complimentary copy of our ‘Guide to East Devon’ (in .pdf). Just drop us a note and we will happily send you one, so you can already start preparing for, and looking forward to, what is to come long before you arrive! And if nearer your actual holiday time we have released a later version, we will send you this too!

There are many walks and bike rides in the immediate area, many starting from Mazzard Farm. Or if you are into Geocaching, there are some exciting ones near us. We’re even planning our own as we speak.

Ottery St Mary

Ottery St. Mary is a small town, situated on the river Otter, in East Devon, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Cushioned in between West Hill and East Hill (where you find Mazzard Farm), Ottery is a friendly place, offering a remarkable number of shops in relation to its size, most of whom locally owned (and many also locally sourced!). Towering over the town is the Parish Church of St. Mary. A beautiful Gothic building, and modelled on Exeter Cathedral.

The town is possibly best known as the birth place of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and avid Harry Potter fans will know Ottery as ‘Ottery St. Catchpole’, the home village of the Weasley family. German readers of this site will recognise the town from its frequent appearance in the ‘Rosamunde Pilcher’ films. Presently, Ottery St. Mary’s main claim to fame is the annual Tar Barrels event, held every 5th of November. A spectacle that must be seen to be believed (see Links section for more details and photo above).

East Devon

East Devon is, as mentioned, acknowledged as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and also includes a major stretch of the World Heritage Coast (the Jurassic Coast) as classified by Unesco. The District offers everything that makes the South West of England a holiday destination of choice for so many, yet because of its proximity to the A30 and M5, railway stations in Exeter and Honiton and the airport in Exeter, access to East Devon and Ottery St. Mary is very good. East Devon is bordered by Dorset on the East, Somerset and Mid Devon on the North, and South Devon on the West. Well-known tourist ‘hot spots’ in East Devon include Sidmouth, Branscombe, Beer, Budleigh Salterton, Exmouth and Topsham.

Bramley cottage is a delightful, spacious, one-bedroom cottage, located on Mazzard Farm and attached to the main farmhouse.

Downstairs, the cottage has a very spacious kitchen and living/dining room, with French doors leading to a private patio. The large double bedroom also has French doors, opening up to gorgeous views over the gardens, orchard and woods. Shower room and toilet are adjacent to the bedroom. Although Bramley cottage only has one bedroom, it comfortably accommodates 4 if required (the sofa downstairs folds out as a comfortable double, and we have Z-beds available). And that still leaves plenty of space to add a cot as well. (Note: Bramley Cottage does NOT have a wood burner. Instead it has a coal effect stove).

Bramley Cottage is a beautiful, spacious, open plan cottage, with 1 bedroom (with kingsize bed, and space for up to 2 additional cots or z-beds as well) and one bathroom. All the beds in Mazzard Farm cottages are of the highest quality, with great, firm coil-sprung mattresses and quality bedlinen.

Bramley cottage is finished and furnished to a high standard, with high quality sofa and comfy chair, atmospheric lighting and views over our gardens and toddler play area.

Although Bramley cottage has only one bedroom, it is approx. 80 m2 in size, and as such highly spacious and offering a high degree of comfort. Bramley also offers the opportunity for additional sleeping area by converting the high quality sofa into a comfortable spare (double) bed.

Bramley cottage has its own outside terrace, with garden furniture and brick BBQ. Bramley is set somewhat apart from our other cottages, and overlooks our gardens, making it a perfect place for anyone looking for peace and tranquillity. Yet, because of its proximity to the toddler play area, and access to the courtyard, Bramley cottage is equally suitable for parents with young children.

Holiday Cottage features:

  • Open plan living and dining. Kitchen with fridge (with 3*freezer compartment) and washer/dryer
  • Flooring downstairs is wood (living room), tiles (kitchen) and wool carpet in the bedroom
  • Coal Effect heater in living room as well as HD ready, flat screen TV with Freeview and DVD player. HiFi set
  • Bedroom with King size bed on upper floor. Glorious views from bedroom
  • Bathroom with shower, sink and wc on upper floor (note: no bath – we can provide a baby bath where needed)
  • All linen and towels are provided. Free availability of cots, high chairs, stair gates and toys
  • Free WiFi available on-site
  • VisitBritain rating: 4*

At Mazzard Farm, we have all the ingredients available for a lovely, relaxing, and truly unforgettable holiday. For example:

The cottages are equipped to a very high standard, and we believe we have provided everything you may need. All linen is provided too as standard. Yet if you get here and feel we have forgotten something, tell us and we’ll do all we can to get it for you

We know that when you pack for your holidays, the last thing you want to have to worry about is bulky toys, games, books, etc. For that reason, we provide all of these, for those who need them. In addition, we can provide you with cots (incl. Linen), a pram, beach towels, and much more. If there is anything specific you feel we can help you with, again, just ask!

There are a number of barbeque areas in the grounds (BBQs provided).

On-site, there is ample opportunity to move around, including our orchard, gardens, children’s play area and our own woods. In addition, there are many walks and rambles in the (immediate) area, some of whom start right from the farm.

The first children’s play area includes a trampoline, sand pit, climbing frame and slide. In addition, there is a second larger outdoor play area, with large ‘pirate castle’, swings, TiPi and football pitch, aimed especially at the older children. Baby-sitting can be arranged. Indeed, all the ingredients you need for a true baby/toddler/child friendly holiday, yet without forgetting about the adults!

We have some bikes (incl. Child seats and a tag-along) available for rent. If this is of interest to you (note: cycling in East Devon is not for the faint-hearted!), let us know, ideally in advance, and we can reserve these for you

We have a good selection of books, games, CDs and DVDs, free for you to borrow whilst at Mazzard Farm. WiFi (free of charge) is available in each cottage

There is a laundry room with washing machine, dryer, iron and ironing board

We have a freezer (accessible 24/7) filled with croissants, pain au chocolats and baguettes, and we provide various other fresh produce, depending on season. In addition, there are a lot of local providers who can supply the most delightful produce, such as meats, fish, ready meals, and lots more. We’d happily assist you and pre-order if this is of interest. Or book, Anne Parris, a local personal chef, if you are up for a real treat. Click here for more info on Anne

All the main supermarkets can deliver at Mazzard Farm (please coordinate a delivery slot with us before you complete your order)

If you would like extra cleaning and/or changing of linen, tell us and we will organise this for you at a small extra fee

With Jacqueline being a holistic therapist, treatments such as Reflexology, Japanese Facial, Chinese Foot Massage, Indian Head Message or Hopi Ear Candling are available on-site, and can be booked in advance. See Be Pampered section for further detail.
