Hidden away yet very accessible (just 20 mins from the M5) The Quantock Estate is nestled between the western slopes of the rolling Quantock Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty and the Brendon Hills on the eastern edge of Exmoor. The Quantocks are one of the UK’s great undiscovered rural areas panoramic views lead through coast, heath and combe. Explore this unspoiled area of Somerset and you’ll find rugged and dramatic coastlines, farmlands and chocolate box villages and towns.
The local village of Bishops Lydeard is situated at the foot of the Quantock Hills and is about five minutes walk from the historical steam railway station of The West Somerset Railway. The old village is a mixture of red sandstone and brick buildings which are all very charming to look at. Further up the road into the village is Mill Lane which, if followed, takes you to the village watermill which has been splendidly restored. The mill is home to a working water wheel, the wheelwright’s shop and the blacksmith’s shop. Activities abound in this neck of the Quantocks. Just ten miles from The Estate is the beach at East Quantoxhead renowned with fossil hunters so make sure the kids pack their equipment and see what you can find! Or you could spend the day at Cannington Activity Centre with climbing ropes and walls they certainly have it all.
